NFL Power Rankings – Week Four
1. New York Giants (1) – Another win against a team they should beat. The Giants better hope Eli's foot feels better soon because they have a huge game in two weeks.
2. New Orleans Saints (3) – Do you know what the scariest thing about the Saints is right now? They have won the last two games without any passing touchdowns from Drew Brees. So basically while everybody was scared to death about their high flying offense, the Saints proved their defense was good enough to carry them. That is pretty impressive.
3. Indianapolis Colts (4) – The Colts completely dominated the Seahawks, although I would've been shocked had it gone any other way. When you're lining up against a team starting Seneca Wallace, that is like being spotted a 10-0 lead before the opening kickoff.
4. New England Patriots (8) – On the flip side to what I wrote below, big win for New England. It amazes me how many close games they win and how many of those games fall into the "lucky" category. I suppose good teams are the ones who get those breaks.
5. Baltimore Ravens (2) – Tough loss for Baltimore. They had a chance but lost it in the end. It might be an old cliché but they have to find a way to win those games, especially against a team like New England.
6. Minnesota Vikings (7) – While the Vikings still almost blew it on MNF, they came away with the win. Brett Favre uncharacteristically played very well and turnover free, almost like he had something to prove…
7. Philadelphia Eagles (6) – The Eagles had a bye week and for their sake, hopefully Donovan McNabb is ready to go. With three easy games against Tampa Bay, Oakland, and Washington coming up, look for them to pad their record a little bit.
8. Pittsburgh Steelers (10) – I've been told a million times since last night that the Steelers are back, although I still have my doubts. Regardless, they play Detroit and Cleveland in the next two weeks so fire up the wagon because it's time for Steeler Nation everybody!!!
9. NY Jets (5) – Welcome to reality Mark Sanchez. It's the NFL and you're going to have many more games like the one you had on Sunday. The thing that will distinguish you from the "busts" is how well you rebound and shake it off for the next game.
10. Denver Broncos (14) – I still really don't know if Denver is "for real", but they are 4-0 so I feel bad doubting them. Thing is, I watched the Bills start 4-0 last year and win three of their next 12 games so I'm a little hesitant about bumping them up any higher at this point. So basically what I'm saying is, settle down Denver fans. If they win at least two of the next three I'll be sure to bump Denver up even higher and take them seriously going forward.
11. San Diego Chargers (9) – Bill Simmons said it best via Twitter during the Chargers/Steelers game. "Note to America: We decided to take tonight off. It's a long season. Hope you understand. Sincerely, the San Diego Chargers."
12. Atlanta Falcons (12) – With the Saints winning during their bye week, the Falcons will have to come back next week more focused than ever to keep pace with New Orleans. It won't be easy as the Falcons face San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, and New Orleans in the next four weeks. I think after the next month has been played out we'll be able to effectively judge if the Falcons have improved from last year or fallen off a bit.
13. San Francisco 49ers (16) – Make no mistake, the 49ers have a pretty solid team put together. They are one incredibly lucky play away from starting out 4-0. Granted, three of those wins are against NFC West teams which isn't saying much, but they are still playing much better than they have in the past. Let's chalk it up to a team playing to the tune of their head coach. And before I'm accused of jumping on the Mike Singletary bandwagon, here is what before the season started on September 7th, 2009:
"If
it wasn't for the QB position, I'd easily have the Niners challenging for the NFC West crown. I really like the coaching style of Mike Singletary and I was really impressed with their style of play after he took over last season."
14. Chicago Bears (15) – The Bears let the Lions hang around for 30 minutes, taking a 21-21 tie into the locker room, but then they took control outscoring Detroit 27-3 in the second half. While I'm still not overly impressed with Chicago, they do have a 3-1 record heading into their bye week. I have this feeling that the NFC North is going to come down to the final few weeks so it's hard to predict anything at this point.
15. Cincinnati Bengals (17) – Did anyone catch the story about how Carson Palmer had to convince Marvin Lewis to go for it on 4th and 11 with a little over a minute remaining in overtime? Lewis was basically coaching not to lose and Palmer convinced him that you have to play to win. My admiration for Palmer went up increasingly after reading this story. It's nice to know some players (or coaches) still have the guts to play for a win. After watching four weeks of Buffalo Bills football, I was almost convinced otherwise.
16. Green Bay Packers (11) – If the Packers have any plans of making the playoffs this year, they need to fix their offensive line in a hurry. Jared Allen spent an equal amount of time in their backfield as Aaron Rodgers did. Speaking of Rodgers, he isn't going to last the season if he keeps taking the hits that he took Monday night.
17. Dallas Cowboys (13) – Tough loss for Dallas on Sunday but they only have themselves to blame. The lack of tackling on the Brandon Marshall touchdown was something straight out of Madden. How do so many people miss one guy? On top of that, they still had a chance to tie before two incomplete passes from Tony Romo ended the game. For as much as I bash the guy, I'll give him credit where it's due. Staring at 4th down and the game, he made a great pass to Sam Hurd - who made an even better run after the catch- to get them within scoring position. It was a nice play all around. I tweeted this before the play was run, but I would've absolutely called a QB draw on the final play for Dallas and I stand by that statement today.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars (22) –Take a look at their upcoming schedule leading up to the game against the Colts in Week 15: Seattle, St Louis, Tennessee, Kansas City, Jets, Buffalo, San Francisco, Houston and Miami. All I'm saying is things just got a little more interesting in the AFC South. But don't be fooled, they aren't winning that division.
19. Houston Texans (20) – In the two losses suffered by Houston, the combined record of those two teams are 5-3. In the two wins by Houston, the combined record is 1-7. I'll let you guys figure that out.
20. Arizona Cardinals (19) – Arizona doesn't have the easy road this year like they had in 2008. They are already two games back in the win column to San Francisco and its three back if you factor in that SF beat them on opening day. For the Cardinals sake, hopefully Kurt Warner took a dip in the fountain of youth during the bye week.
21. Miami Dolphins (23) – The Dolphins completely dominated Buffalo on Sunday. Without Joey Porter, with a second year QB making his first ever NFL start, the Dolphins didn't even seem fazed as they beat the hell out of the Bills and embarrassed them right out of the half empty Land Shark Stadium.
22. Tennessee Titans (18) – Because I'm completely unoriginal, I'll ask the same question everyone else is asking, what happened to the Tennessee Titans? Did Vince Young's voodoo doll finally start working? Does Jeff Fisher finally need to move on? Is the death of Steve McNair still looming over the franchise? Listen, I don't have the answers, but the Titans are finished. No way they make the playoffs after this start.
23. Seattle Seahawks (21) – It's almost comparable to JaMarcus Russell, but not quite since he wasn't a top draft pick, but how the hell does Seneca Wallace keep his job? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? This guy is so bad I actually washed the dishes twice on Sunday just to get away from the game.
24. Carolina Panthers (25) – I'd like to congratulate Jake Delhomme on not throwing an interception this week for the first time in the 2009 NFL Season. Cheers Jake! I also apologize to everybody reading this for using the same joke that has been used for years when a bad team has a bye week. My apologies.
25. Detroit Lions (26) – I didn't intentionally move Detroit up after a blowout loss, but the other teams below them are just that bad. I was going to originally put Washington ahead of them until I remembered that they beat Washington last week and that wouldn't make much sense at all. Especially when you consider…
26. Washington Redskins (27) - ...Washington barely beat a very bad Tampa Bay team. I mean, they were losing 10-0 at the half, managed to almost tie the game and had the PAT blocked. Luckily Campbell hit Santana Moss for another touchdown or it would've probably been the worst two weeks in Redskins history.
27. Buffalo Bills (24) – You know what really grinds my gears? That Pizza Hut commercial with Drew Cerza, the Wing King from Buffalo, NY. So you're telling me that Pizza Hut wings are actually so comparable to genuine Buffalo wings that nobody can tell. I call BS on this. And I'm disappointed in Cerza for selling out his name like that.
28. Oakland Raiders (29) – I've said this a million times about a million different players, but how is J.P. Losman stuck in the UFL (assuming it wasn't his choice to begin with) while players like JaMarcus Russell continue to start for their team. Unbelievable. I want to know how the experts rank draft busts because right now Russell has to be in the discussion for top five of all time, right?
29. Kansas City Chiefs (29) – Is it any coincidence that the three teams who fired their offensive coordinator less than two weeks before the regular season are in the bottom six of the league? Maybe those coordinators weren't getting the job done, but that is also a sign of complete chaos when that happens.
30. Cleveland Browns (32) – The Browns almost got the win…almost… and it was against a pretty good team on top of that. I have no doubts that if Cleveland plays the same brand of football this Sunday they'll chalk up their first victory of the season.
31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31) – The Bucs came close to netting their first victory but fell just short against Washington. Normally I'd have to give them credit, but these are the same Redskins who lost to Detroit just last week. So honestly, Tampa Bay probably should've won, especially considering the fact that they were winning 10-0 at halftime. If Tampa couldn't handle Buffalo or Washington, how are they supposed to take on Philly, New England, Green Bay, Atlanta, New Orleans, or the Jets?
32. St Louis Rams (30) – The Rams are closing in on a full calendar year without a regular season win. Honestly, I can't believe it took me this long to put them at 32. I know the Browns are bad, but this was a complete oversight on my part and I apologize to all the readers out there. To be specific, the last time the Rams won a regular season game was October 19, 2008 against the Dallas Cowboys. With games coming up against Minnesota, Jacksonville, and Indianapolis; the next time the Rams even have a fighting chance at winning is Week 8 against Detroit. Looking at their schedule beyond that, I'm hard pressed to find a victory this season. We might be looking at another 0-16 season here folks.
