NFL Picks - Week 8

It looks like you're stuck with me for at least a few more weeks anyways, hopefully I can manage to make this work properly this week and get a full column out of it. Last week was a pretty good rebound week for my picks, but Devin kept pace of course. Somehow we still have identical records after 7 weeks of the season, and we've been within 1 of each other all year. Enough aimless rambling though, on to who you can expect to win the games this weekend.

Houston Texans @ Buffalo Bills

As has been stated here numerous times already, the Texans are such an up and down team, they're hard to figure out. Going with their usual pattern, they're due for a letdown this week. However, as a Bills fan, and having seem them in person again this past week, I don't think that letdown will happen. The Bills offense has been nothing short of putrid, and the only reason they've won the past 2 weeks on the road is due to the fact that they've forced several turnovers and haven't really committed many of their own. Houston's offense is too explosive for Buffalo to bottle up all game long, and Owen Daniels in particular figures to tear it up on Sunday. The Bills give up the middle of the field all day long and are a dream come true for most opposing tight ends, and Daniels has been playing like one of the best lately.

Cleveland Browns @ Chicago Bears

The Browns are absolutely one of the worst teams in the NFL, a 6-3 win at Buffalo not withstanding... Devin and I have joked about how their best bet at this point would be to just let Josh Cribbs play QB full time at this point, as he's far and away the most productive member of the team. Chicago is coming off an embarrasing loss to the Bengals last week and return home knowing they have to beat a lowly Cleveland team to try and keep pace with Minnesota and Green Bay within the NFC North. The Bears should take this one easily, though I'm betting it will end up closer than expected.

Seattle Seahawks @ Dallas Cowboys

Personally, I thought Seattle would bounce back a little this year, but that appears to not be the case at all. Seattle has struggled thus far and barring a quick turn around will be staring up at San Francisco and Arizona in the division for the rest of the season. Heading to Dallas to face a surprising squad that knocked off Atlanta convincingly last week doesn't help matters. Miles Austin seems to have made himself Tony Romo's target of choice and the Cowboys' offense has flourished accordingly. Seattle has the better defense of the two teams, but Dallas seems much more capable with the ball in their hands. Dallas takes this one, but I don't think it's going to be a very pretty game to watch.

St. Louis Rams @ Detroit Lions

Speaking of not being pretty to watch... When was the last time the Lions were actually favored in a game? Detroit has definitely been playing better this year than last, despite what their record might indicate. On the other hand, St. Louis has been every bit as bad this year as the Lions were last. It's now been more than a full calendar year since the Rams won a game, a streak that now reaches 17 games. The Rams have absolutely nothing going on for them at this point and this game will probably prove one of their best chances to win this year. At least they are on a bye next week, though they might find a way to screw that up too. Detroit, at home, should be able to handle this game. I'll have to check the scores on Sunday night though, because there is no chance I'm spending any time watching this one.

San Francisco 49ers @ Indianapolis Colts

Well Michael Crabtree finally made his long overdue debut and he looked... well, decent I suppose. The guy has the ability to become a force for the 49ers but starting almost midway through the season is not the best way to go about it. The 49ers are 3-3 and have lost back to back games heading into Indy this weekend. Bad news is that it's about to become 3 straight. The Colts, and particularly Peyton Manning, have looked nothing short of dominant on their way to 6-0. On top of that, they're getting Anthony Gonzalez back at receiver to give Manning yet another target. The 49ers are likely in for a long day on Sunday and I can't see their offense, Alex Smith or not, keeping pace with the Colts.

Miami Dolphins @ New York Jets

Last week's picks were full of road teams and this week the complete opposite is true. The Jets continue the trend for the week, hosting the division rival Dolphins. Miami is fresh off a game that saw equal parts epic collapse and incredible Saints offense put them down to 2-4. That means Miami now resides in last place in the AFC East and are quickly looking at a doubtful return to the postseason. The Jets were awful two weeks ago when hosting the Bills, but got the perfect rebound opportunity at Oakland last Sunday. Mark Sanchez should have a bit of his confidence back as he faces a Miami defense that is allowing over 25 points per game. Shonn Greene gets his chance to shine now, taking over for Leon Washington who is out for the year, but it's still Thomas Jones that leads the attack for the Jets. Tough divisional game, so it'll stay close, but the Jets find a way to hold on and move to 5-3 heading into their bye week.

Denver Broncos @ Baltimore Ravens

This was one of the tougher games for me to pick this week, and it should be a good one to watch for the same reason. Baltimore is 3-3 after winning their first 3 games. The problem is the competition got notably more difficult in the last 3, facing New England, Cinncy, and Minnesota. They lost all three of those games, but by 6, 3, and 2 points respectively. They've had a bye week to fully prepare for the visiting Broncos and know they need a big win against a good team to have any hopes at the playoffs. All these things point to a Ravens win to me. Sure, Denver is undefeated and playing much better than most people expected and their defense has easily been the best in the league, but I smell let down. I think this is the week they play one of those games where things just don't bounce their way and they end up fighting an uphill battle all day long.

New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles

One of only two road teams I picked this week, the New York Giants need to wake up quickly. Losing to the Saints 2 weeks ago wasn't a big deal, though getting embarrased by them as they did was. Losing at home to Arizona on Sunday night was a much bigger problem however. The Giants need to win this game or they are going to have a ton of doubters on their hands. Lost in the 5-0 start is the fact that 4 of those teams were the Redskins, Bucs, Chiefs, and Raiders. Dallas was the only real team they faced and they narrowly beat them 33-31. Looking ahead, a rematch with Washington and a home game against Carolina are the only games that can be considered easy left on the schedule. Philadelphia has played almost the exact same schedule as the Giants thus far, replacing a win over the Cowboys with one over the Panthers and a bye instead of the loss to Arizona. They may be without Brian Westbrook this week as he was concussed in their game against Washington on Monday night. LeSean McCoy has looked decent in spot duty so far and will need to step up if Westbrook does in fact have to sit this one out. The NFC East is highly competitive if nothing else, and the winner of this game will do a lot to help themselves towards taking the division. I think the Giants bounce back this week after back to back disappointments.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Tennessee Titans

I'll probably be in the minority with this pick, but Tennessee has to win sooner or later. I know they look like they've quit already, and I know Vince Young is being thrust back into the starter's role this week, but at home, against a Jaguars team that isn't very impressive... I just think the time is right for them to get a W finally. For the record, I think Young is pretty lousy as a quarterback in the NFL, but I understand they have to give it one more chance to see what they have. I think he provides the spark needed to win this game this week, but it won't take long for everybody to remember why he's been on the bench for so long. Big day for Chris Johnson propels the Titans to victory. On the bright side, there is likely going to be just as many Jags fans at this game as there are in Jacksonville on any given Sunday. ZING!

Oakland Raiders @ San Diego Chargers

I thoroughly believe the Raiders win against the Eagles was a complete anomaly and that they due in fact suck badly. How JaMarcus Russell has remained a starting quarterback in the NFL for this long is beyond me, but when Al Davis is pulling the strings and your head coach is breaking people's jaws, anything is possible I suppose. Russell has a 47.2 rating on the year and completes barely over 46% of his passes. Only Derek Anderson is worse, and nobody else is really even close. As for San Diego, they happen to have a rather good quarterback in Phillip Rivers. Their defense has given up a fair amount of points this year, but the offense also puts up about 27 a game. San Diego should have a much easier time in this one than they did in the season opener and I expect a double digit win.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

OMG it's Favre Bowl! I think I may be one of the few people that really isn't all that excited about this game. I won't pretend I'm not intrigued, but more so by the fact that these are two pretty good football teams doing battle for a division. The Vikings are 6-1 and coming off their first loss of the season, while the Packers are 4-2 and have had successive beatdowns of weak opponents. Favre is good, we know this... but Adrian Peterson is just ridiculous. I've never seen a player who looks so much like a game of Madden every week. Between the stiff arms, trucking over people, and just sprinting past everybody, he is absolutely the most entertaining player in the league right now. Anyways, the key to this game is clear, the Packers HAVE to protect Aaron Rodgers far better than they did in Minnesota a few weeks ago. The kid is a great quarterback and if he has time to throw the ball, it's very difficult to stop the Packers. Even with him ending up on his back 8 times against the Vikings before, he put up phenomenal numbers in that game. Favre said this is "just another game" and he's not viewing it any differently. I say he's a tremendous big fat liar. You know damn well he wants to have the game of his life on Sunday and I for one hope he puts up something more reminiscent of the end of last season. I've made my stance on Favre perfectly clear and would nothing more than for him to fail miserably in this one. For this week only, I'm a full fledged Packer fan.

Carolina Panthers @ Arizona Cardinals

After having witnessed Jake Delhomme in person last Sunday, the man officially has lost it. Sure, he put up 300+ yards on the day, but the interceptions were just awful, and back breaking on top of it. It was against the Cardinals in the playoffs last year where the slide began and there has just been no recovering since. The Bills offense made the Panthers defense look stout last weekend, but they really aren't all that good. They are certainly not good enough to keep up with Arizona's passing arsenal. The Cardinals are moving themselves away from the rest of their division and another win here keeps up the momentum because San Francisco is about 98% ensured of losing their game as well. If the turnovers continue for Carolina, this game could be ugly fast as Arizona is highly capable of converting them into points in a quick fashion. Cardinals win this one going away.

Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints

Every time I think the Falcons are for real, they turn around and drop a game by double digits. First New England beat them by 16 in Week 3, then the Cowboys did the same last week. Both games were on the road, but still, if Atlanta wants to be a serious contender in the playoffs, they need to win one of those games once in a while, and certainly not lose by as much as they have. Unfortunately for them they are playing the Saints, in New Orleans on Monday Night. This may be the first non Buffalo Monday Night game I fully devote my attention to in awhile, because I think this one has potential shootout written all over it. Atlanta surely wants to prove they can hang with the NFC elite, and New Orleans is definitely the class of the league at the moment. Both teams have big time offensive ability and similar defenses in terms of points surrendered. I see the offenses being showcased in this game. I'm taking the Saints to stay undefeated in a fireworks show, but Atlanta stays close because they are a solid team and this is a divisional game.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins Running Diary

We're going to try something new this week and see how it works, so throughout the afternoon as the game goes on, I'll be updating this post in real time with all my thoughts and comments on the game. You'll need to keep refreshing the page or check back throughout the day in order to stay up to date. As always, feedback is appreciated and can be addressed to feedback@dandssports.com or can be left on our Facebook Page.

3:30pm - I've been having some technical difficulties with MS Word (I know, problems with a Microsoft product, shocking huh?) linking to the blog, so I'm going to have to do this the difficult way, may result in a few less posts from me, but hopefully the Bills give me some good things to talk about for a change.

3:41pm - Willis McGahee already has more TDs this season in 4 games than he did in each of his last 2 years in Buffalo. It's no wonder Bills fans hate him so much, the theory that he wasn't trying to just seems more and more true all the time.

4:01pm - Alright folks, gametime is just ahead! Here's hoping the Bills can take advantage of a quarterback getting his first ever NFL start today and that the offense can actually operate functionally. I plan on keeping an ongoing tally of Trent Edwards pass attempts over 15 yards, that is passes thrown in the air over 15 yards, not just gains of that length. Devin is setting the over/under at 3...

4:12pm - So Chad Henne's first pass attempt was 15+ yards down the field... glad a guy with almost no NFL experience has the guts to try it but Edwards doesn't.

4:13pm - Chris Kelsay has taken a ton of heat from Bills fans, myself included, for making a boatload of cash and not producing. Let me say he's been much improved this year so far.

4:18pm - Great work Bills, Roscoe gets you fantastic field position and you go 3 and out... Lucky a penalty bailed you out. Now they better do something with it, and I don't mean a field goal.

4:21pm - Discouraging start by the offense yet again. 2 gift wrapped opportunities that lead to 0 points. At least Fred Jackson is still running the ball well.

4:32pm - Welcome Back Beastmode! Could you and Fred kindly wake up the rest of your offensive teammates?

4:34pm - Wow, more awful play calling. Can we officially start the Please Fire Dick Jauron Countdown Clock now?

4:39pm - The Bengals and Browns are doing their best to end in a tie in Cleveland. It always amazes me when an NFL games does end in a tie. I mean, how can neither team manage to at least get into field goal position in a full quarter?

4:43pm - So Mark Sanchez is human after all? Pick 6 for New Orleans to put them up 10-0.

4:48pm - Both my cats are curled up and sleeping, after watching this game so far, I'm a little jealous.Bold

4:52pm - Speaking of Pick 6's, the Dolphins get one by jumping a route. Gee, do you think they realized that the Bills throw underneath and nothing else?

4:54pm - The Bengals finally kick a field goal with 4 seconds left in OT to get the win. It may not be pretty, but they're quietly 3-1.

4:56pm - Trent Tracker = 1, nice grab by Owens... see what happens when you go down the field???

4:58pm - Wow, move the ball down the field in a hurry, then net -3 yards once you get to the 15. Settle for a field goal. This is no way to win football games. Hey, at least they outscored the Sabres this weekend though, that was a legit concern for some.

5:04pm - Completely unproven, first time NFL starter - 3 pass attempts over 15 yards. Multi-year starter - 1 attempt. Words can't convey the frustration I have with this.

5:08pm - 17-3 Miami already in the 2nd quarter. For those questioning why they were above the Bills in Devin's latest Power Rankings, do you need more proof?

5:10pm - Things currently more interesting to me than this game: VeryFakeAlDavis on Twitter - "Pretty good right? RT @FootballEditor: JaMarcus Russell 11 of 30 passing, one fumble."

5:14pm - The word "cougar" becoming mainstream has completely ruined all the fun involved.

5:24pm - Maybe someday the Bills will understand that the offensive line can make or break a team, and it's the reason our team has been broken for the past decade. 17-3 Miami at the half, 6 quarters and counting without an offensive TD for Buffalo.

5:30pm - My buddy Paul showed up at halftime, I tried to warn him it wasn't worth watching. I will feel no guilt when he suffers in the 2nd half.

5:41pm - I almost forgot to turn the game back on... in fact, I wish I had.

5:45pm - Hey Bills, newsflash, the Dolphins are going to run. If we could force Henne to make plays the defense might be able to hold them in check.

5:49pm - Mark Sanchez is directly responsible for 14 New Orleans points. Maybe Jets fans should haven't been in such a hurry to annoint him.

5:50pm - Alright Bills, might as well go for full fledged embarassment at this point!

5:56pm - Good Lord, this is just difficult to watch at this point. Another route jumped. It's going to keep happening all year if we never try to throw the ball down the field.

6:00pm - Anybody think Jauron would have ever gone for it right there if the tables were turned? He wouldn't know killer instinct if it bitch slapped him across his skeleton face.

6:03pm - Text from Devin - "I'll let you decide where to put the Bills ranking spot because if you let me I am putting them at 32" While it's bad, there is still Oakland, Cleveland, Tampa, and St. Louis behind us at least...

6:08pm - Paul didn't even make it through the 3rd quarter, he left in favor of going home to do yardwork, and again, I'm a little jealous.

6:09pm - I said it already earlier today, but if the Bills lose to the Browns next week and Jauron still has a job, I'm not sure I can handle being a Bills fan anymore. Remind me again why I dropped $400 on Sunday Ticket instead of spending $180 on Center Ice?

6:12pm - Trent through the ball for more than 15 yards for the second time. He's 2-2, 62 yards on those plays. I'm also one more attempt away from winning the pool.

6:15pm - 3-3 on deep passes now... it only took 3 quarters to figure it out today huh?

6:17pm - To add insult to injury, in one of my fantasy leagues I'm up against Ronnie Brown and the Dolphins Defense. I'm currently down by 49 points.

6:23pm - Buffalo Bills Football: Failure Tested, Failure Approved!

6:32pm - Sort of regretting my purchase of Bills @ Panthers tickets for 10/25. Oh well, at least it'll get me out and about while my wife is in Thailand!

6:33pm - 3rd and 6, completion for a loss. Amazing!

6:34pm - For those seeking entertainment, I'd suggest the Jets/Saints game. Both teams are actually playing football in that game...

6:37pm - The Jets defense has mostly shut down the Saints offense today actually, but Sanchez is costing them the game with his turnovers and subsequent Saints points.

6:38pm - That's 4 sacks today for the Bills, has to be the most in quite some time. See, I can pretend there is a positive coming out of this game...

6:42pm - The Bills last divisional win was December 9, 2007 and I don't see the trend ending anytime soon.

6:44pm - My focus has officially switched to "What's for dinner?"

6:45pm - Did Kevin Harlan get a new stopwatch this week or something? I've never heard a broadcaster announce the hangtime on EVERY single punt!

6:47pm - Well the Bills have officially quit for the day, I'm on the verge of doing so as well.

6:47pm - "Miami looking every bit the division champion they are." Really Harlan??? Are you sure the Bills don't just suck that much? The Dolphins were still 0-3 coming in to this game in case you forgot. They're better than 1-3 suggests, but they're still only 3rd best in the division.

6:49pm - I play Fantasy Football to escape being a Bills fan, and now they're costing me that too? Down by 59 and climbing against Brown and the Fish Defense.

6:50pm - 4 for 5 on 15+ yard pass attempts now...

6:52pm - Another Trent Edwards INT. A fitting place to end this little experiment I think. Unless people tell me they really enjoyed this, I think I shall never attempt that again. It might be enjoyable if I were to follow a decent game, but this was just painful all the way.

NFL Picks - Week 4

Devin is busy with reality this week, so I'm taking over the picks column. I think he quite purposely planned this, as this is the hardest week to pick thus far in my opinion. Anyways, I managed to go 12-4 last week, which I can't complain about and maybe I can keep that momentum moving forward. I'd like to hang my hat on picking the Lions to get their first win in a very long time, but I'm pretty sure many others, Devin included, picked it as well. I will say that I absolutely did not expect the Titans to fall to 0-3, thus making the Jets 3-0, nor did I expect Pittsburgh to drop a game to Cinncy either. We're 3 weeks in and we've already seen quite a few surprises, and the true contenders are starting to shake loose from the pretenders at this point, so without any further nonsense, let's get on with the Week 4 picks shall we?

Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears

Sure, the Lions knocked off the Redskins last week and assured they won't go 0 for the season again, but let's face it, they still aren't that good of a football team. As for the Bears, I'm not sold either way yet. I predicted Forte to have a sophomore slump this season and avoided him in fantasy land entirely, and so far I look like a genius for that. With Cutler helming the team, it's going to involve a lot of chucking the ball all over the place and that doesn't work out well for a feature back. The Bears showed signs of being the team so many expect last week and Cutler was solid, and I'd expect that to continue against the lowly Lions.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns

The Browns are flat out the worst team in the NFL I've seen this year, and Devin would agree since they currently occupy slot #32 in his Power Rankings. The Craptastic Quarterback Carousel continues in Cleveland (how's that for alliteration?) this week as Derek Anderson gets the go as the starter. It's no secret Eric Mangini is not well liked by his players and it really seems as though many have given up on him already in an attempt to see him lose his job.

As for the Bengals, if you read my AFC North preview, you'd see that I expected the Bengals to bounce back a bit with a healthy Carson Palmer returning to form. They certainly seemed to be on that path after knocking off the defending champs last week. They are one bizarre miracle play away from 3-0 at this point. They should have no trouble with this one, though divisional games often prove quirky.

Seattle Seahawks @ Indianapolis Colts

The Seahawks are a very different team without a healthy Matt Hasselbeck leading the way. Last week they battled hard with the Bears despite Seneca Wallace starting at QB and despite some of the worst uniforms I can ever recall. This week they head on the road to Indy to face a team that has looked pretty excellent thus far and Peyton Manning who is up to his usual tricks. With the Colts averaging in the mid 20s and Manning throwing for over 300 yards per game, the Seahawks defense is going to be in for a long day.

New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs

The Giants have simply looked like the best team in the NFL thus far this season while cruising to a 3-0 start. I spent all offseason talking about how the Giants had no receivers and were therefore going to struggle throwing the ball, but Eli Manning has made due just fine with Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Add the two headed running attack of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw and they are damn tough to stop. By contrast, the Chiefs offense has been downright miserable. Arrowhead Stadium can be a tough place to play, but I don't think the Giants are going to have many issues this week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Washington Redskins

This game couldn't have come at a better time for Jim Zorn and the Redskins... or is it perhaps their worst nightmare? After being the team to finally hand the Lions a win, Washington is under heavy fire and Zorn may be looking for a new job soon. Jason Campbell hasn't panned out in the least as an NFL starter and Clinton Portis can't do it by himself. If an absolutely dreadful Bucs team were to beat the Redskins at home, there would probably be no recovering. Byron Leftwhich has finally been sent to the bench where he belonged all along in favor of Josh Johnson. The Bucs have two young QBs that need to see the field if they're going to develop at all and that begins this week. Tampa is a very bad team, but I'm willing to bet they still put up a fight before Washington ultimately pulls one out.

Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars

I don't think anybody would have said before the season that the Titans would be heading into this game at 0-3, but here we are. The Titans need to turn things around very quickly if they're going to be thinking about a playoff berth this year, and this is as good of a place as any to start. The Titans defense is not the same as it was a year ago, and it's cost them so far, but the Jaguars have one guy to focus on. If they can bottle up Maurice Jones-Drew, Tennessee should have a good day. Despite the record, the Titans are still a good team and they will show it on Sunday. Chris Johnson has a big day and the Titans get their first win of the season.

Oakland Raiders @ Houston Texans

Oh those Oakland Raiders... so far the highlight of the year for me with regards to the Raiders is following @veryfakeAlDavis on Twitter. He makes every bit as much sense as the real Al Davis does. JaMarcus Russell is absolutely terrible and doesn't deserve to be on an NFL field, much less as a starting quarterback. 31-75, 378 yards, 1 TD, 4 INTs in 3 games. The Raiders are scoring 12 points a game and somehow they actually won a game.

Houston has played Jekyll and Hyde so far this season, but they are still a much better team than the Raiders. The defense is their weak spot, but since the Raiders have no offense at all, that shouldn't be an issue this week. Maybe we'll finally see Steve Slaton show up and make all those that drafted him in the 1st round of their fantasy drafts feel a little better, but even if he doesn't, Schaub and company will toss the ball all over the field.

Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots

In the words of Lee Corso, "not so fast my friends!". That's what the Patriots said to everybody with last week's fairly dominant win over the Falcons. People were trying to write off New England after a slow start, but the Patriots are still a team to be dealt with. Baltimore has played very well so far, but their defense is not quite the caliber it has been in years past and the Patriots will be looking to exploit that. This is a tough one to pick and I've been very impressed with Joe Flacco so far this season as the offense is putting up nearly 35 points a game. I hope the Ravens can pull off a win, but I'm going with the home team in this case since it's so close in my book. Pats move to 3-1 and make everybody forget what they were thinking last week.

New York Jets @ New Orleans Saints

This game is everything the Bucs/Redskins game isn't. Both teams come in 3-0 and the winner will establish themselves as one of the best in the league. The Jets have mostly gotten things done with a much improved defense, which isn't too surprising considering Rex Ryan is at the helm now. The Saints of course have used their offense to blow everybody off the field thus far, averaging a mere 40 points per game. Something has to give though. The Saints showed their offense can be slowed down last week, as the Bills held them for 3 quarters, so if the Jets offense can produce, they clearly have a good chance. I'm not quite ready to annoint Mark Sanchez just yet and he'll need a very solid game in order for the Jets to win. In the end, I'm going with the home team again, as I think the Saints offense will do just enough to outscore the Jets.

Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins

The Bills are getting my pick solely because Chad Henne is starting his first NFL game. The Dolphins may be 0-3, and while they certainly aren't as good as last year would have indicated, they aren't completely awful either. The Bills looked highly disappointing on offense last week, not able to score at all against a less than stellar Saints defense. Trent Edwards needs to start attempting to throw the ball down the field if the Bills expect to have any success, and if he doesn't get the ball to Terrell Owens and Lee Evans a bit more, that blow up everybody wants so bad will more than likely come. The Bills defense has been solid and should keep a first time starting QB in check, so the offense needs to put up points. Bills squeak out an ugly one down in Miami.

Dallas Cowboys @ Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are 3-0, but only because of who they played in my opinion. Cleveland and Oakland are two of the worst 5 teams in the league, and the win against the Bengals was a bit of a fluke clearly. The charade can't go on forever, and while the Cowboys aren't really that great of a team in their own right, they're still better than Denver. Tony Romo attempted to silence critics last week by playing a safe, solid game and it worked... kind of. He got the win, but the critics just found a new reason to rip him apart. Romo is certainly overrated and got too much hype early on, but he can still be a decent QB in this league. Felix Jones won't be playing, but Marion Barber should be back and I think the Cowboys offense should be able to put up pretty solid numbers on the Broncos. Dallas has nothing special on defense, but I have a feeling this is the week we see the real Kyle Orton show up, and the turnovers that come with that.

St. Louis Rams @ San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers return home after a crushing defeat at the hands of Super Hero Brett Favre in Minnesota last Sunday. The Vikings snatched away a victory, but San Fran proved they are a team to be taken seriously. They have to be the odds on favorite to win the NFC West based on what we've seen thus far. The Frank Gore injury is a serious blow to the team, as the offense was heavily reliant on him, but thankfully it's the Rams they face this week. A tough 49er defense should easily shut down the abysmal Rams offense and take some of the pressure of Shaun Hill in the process. This game could be bowling shoe ugly, but Mike Singletary and his team should certainly walk away with the win at home.

San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers defense has suddenly looked a lot less mighty since Troy Polamalu went down in week 1, giving up a combined 40 points in their two losses since then. They get to return home this week, where they have been nearly unbeatable over the last few seasons, and it comes just in time for Pittsburgh. 1-2 was not the start most people had Pittsburgh pegged for, and with the Ravens off to 3-0, the Steelers need to pick it up in order to keep pace. San Diego has looked pretty solid in going 2-1 so far, losing by just 5 against a tough Baltimore team. As usual, the offense is putting points on the board, despite the injury to LaDainian Tomlinson, but the defense has had trouble stopping anybody too.

I think this game will be a bit higher scoring than is usually the case when Pittsburgh is involved, and I see the Steelers getting a much needed win in the end. They are better than their record would indicate and this is the perfect chance to prove it. As we've seen before, the Chargers have the luxury of being able to drop some games early and still win their division, so a loss is not critical to them in this game.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings

Forgive me if I don't pile on the "Brett Favre should have been playing all along" bandwagon. I still can't stand the crap he pulled all summer and one pass isn't going to change that. Poor Greg Lewis by the way, the catch was far better than the pass in this instance, but that is clearly not how it will be remembered. The only thing I will say, is that is the first play all year I've seen that Favre has made that either Jackson or Rosenfels likely couldn't have. Fact of the matter is that without Adrian Peterson, the Vikings are a fairly average team at best. Peterson is one of the most fun players to watch in the league at this point and you really do sit there waiting to see what he can do next.

As for the Packers, Aaron Rodgers is a damn good quarterback and has proven it early and often. Their defense is also significantly improved this season under Dom Capers, and will probably only get better as the team gets more familiar with the new scheme. The Packers have a bye after this game, followed by Detroit and Cleveland, and then a quick rematch with this same Minnesota team at Lambeau. This presents a great opportunity for the Packers to put some distance on the rest of the division, as both the Vikings and Bears have a more difficult couple of weeks in front of them. I look for the Packers to head into the Metrodome seeking revenge on #4, coming at him hard and often. Packers win despite a huge day from Peterson.

Where Else Would You Rather Be?

I suppose that doing something 3 years in a row can officially be called a tradition, but this one almost died in its tracks before it really got started. Of course I wanted to go, but for a multitude of reasons, it seemed as though my newly born streak of attending Buffalo Bills Home Openers was going to come to an early end. Things have a way of working out though don't they?

First I rescheduled my trip home to Western NY from late October to mid September in order to catch a few of my younger brother's soccer games during his senior year of High School. Then, no less than 4 people contacted me with extra tickets to the game. I had to turn them down as spending money to go to the game wasn't in my budgeted plans and I had intentions of sitting around my parent's house to watch the game with my dad. But, when something is supposed to be, there's just no fighting it. Thursday afternoon I get a text message, asking me yet again if I wanted to go to the Bills game on Sunday. This time, I read the magic words though... Free! Destiny said I was going to keep my streak alive and who was I to fight it?

I had met my buddy from college earlier in the week to grab lunch and catch up while I was in town, so he knew I was around, and thankfully, when his dad turned up with some spare tickets, he was quick to let me know about it. In addition, another of our good friends from college was planning on going to the game as well, so we could all ride up together. We piled into my friend's car Sunday morning and made the hour and a half trip north to Ralph Wilson Stadium, with my streak alive and kicking.

Now, as I've mentioned, I've been to the Bills' Home Opener each of the last two years, which might not sound like a big deal, but considering I've been living in North Carolina since 2006, I consider it something of an accomplishment. Oddly enough, I had only made it to a handful of games over the course of the years before I moved, but some combination of absence making the heart grow fonder as well as growing up and actually making some money for myself had made the trip something to look forward to each year. Each of the last two seasons has seen a typical Western New York day in terms of weather, temperatures in the 50s and a gray, rainy atmosphere. This year had a different feel to it though. First off, this was the first time I'd been to a non 1pm start, so instead of being up at the crack of dawn and filing into the parking lot at 7am, it was closer to noon when we arrived at the stadium. On top of that, there was plenty of sun and temperatures in the mid 70s, something that doesn't really resemble the start of autumn in that part of the world too often.

After parking in somebody's front yard down the road from the stadium (and for those unfamiliar, it's really quite the standard practice), we began our walk towards our destination. There was definitely something in the air as everybody we came across seemed in high spirits. Forget the fact that the economy has been down for a year plus now, particularly in this area of the country where it hasn't been particularly strong in a very long time to begin with... it was football season once again. Now don't get me wrong, it was no surprise to see people out tailgating and enjoying themselves at The Ralph. I've been to games in all sorts of weather, from the aforementioned rainy days, to near blizzard like conditions, and even blustery sub zero days, and the people always show up. This day felt different to me though. People in t-shirts and shorts, playing catch with a football or enjoying a nice game of cornhole (not nearly as disgusting as it might sound), enjoying some adult beverages. I really can't imagine many things more enjoyable.

One of the great things about Buffalo Bills football in Western New York is the role it plays as a great uniter. Nearly everybody in the area pays attention to the Bills at some level, and it's highly likely that you're going to run into people that you know while attending a game. I went with friends I had made in college, but we tailgated with one of my best friends from high school... who happened to be there with somebody else I went to college with. Additionally, there were plenty of people I had become acquainted with after my college days had passed, and even people I had befriended here in North Carolina at the game. Regrettably, I didn't get a chance to visit with everybody I would have liked to, but that always seems to be the case, and there will of course be other games in the future. The point being, people from all walks of life come together and unite over their common love of something they all grew up with.

As my luck would have it, our tickets for the game were in the Jim Kelly Club section of the stadium. Some place I surely had never been before, as the tickets aren't exactly cheap, but again, thanks to the generosity of others I had a chance to enjoy it on this Sunday. Now the Kelly Club has a full bar and concession areas, as well as numerous TVs and tables to enjoy before the game (or in some cases, which I can't comprehend in the least, during the game), and by its nature, draws a slightly more affluent crowd. The interesting part of this to me however was the fact that while these people have had more money than the common fan, they didn't act all that differently. Most of them were still fueled by alcohol and plenty boisterous and loud throughout the course of the game. At the end of the day, they were all still fans, just like everybody else in the stadium. Now, compare this to some of the other stadiums and sporting events I've attended up and down the East Coast and you could see what an interesting experience it became for me. I've seen places where the prime seats are filled up with people simply there for a social outing, not really caring at all about the game going on right in front of them. This is something that drives me nuts, knowing how many truly passionate fans are out there, unable to attend games due to high ticket prices. You don't really find much of that at The Ralph however.

The Bills came out firing on all cylinders and jumped out to a comfortable lead early. The crowd was in full throat, enjoying their first taste of live football for the year, made only better by their team's performance in the early going. This atmosphere can't truly be conveyed in words, but it's purely and simply one of the most fun things to be involved in. 73,000 people with a common goal, uniting as one to try and propel something they believe in forward. But as the game wore on and Tampa Bay cut into the lead, the steam began to seep out of the crowd little by little. One of the downsides of being a Buffalo Bills fan is knowing all too well what it feels like to have your heart ripped out and stomped on, it had happened just 6 days prior in fact. This is one of the reasons I always find the atmosphere at the stadium before a game so amazing, no matter how many times we get crushed as fans, we always seem to be willing to come right back and lay ourselves on the line yet again. As the 3rd quarter wore on for what seemed like forever with Buffalo not able to get their momentum back, the entire stadium seemed as if they were just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Then it happened... The superstar with the troubled past, the guy who made his way to our quiet little team where we don't get players like him, seeking a chance to prove himself once again. It was a 43 yard pass, put right on the money, and Terrell Owens had caught his first touchdown as a Buffalo Bill, pushing the lead to a safe 16 point lead in the process. The stadium erupted once again, and for another week the joy was restored to all of Western New York.

Leaving the stadium is always another interesting chance for social observation. The outcome of the game completely effects the actions of the mass majority of people leaving, and it's something that is very noticeable. Leaving after a win like this is a fun time, people are laughing and goofing around in a care free manner. Your chances of a car stopping to let you out of your parking spot are increased infinitely as well. Should the Bills suffer yet another soul crushing loss, things are often not so pretty. It's both kind of sad and amazing simultaneously to see how much the results of a football game can have on an entire community.

At any rate, my career record while attending Bills game is now up to 7-3 (somebody should buy me season tickets!) and will next be put to the test in Charlotte in late October. I'm looking forward to the game because I know there will be plenty of Bills fans in attendance, but it's just not the same as going to Ralph Wilson Stadium, especially for the first home game of the year, when all our hopes and dreams aren't yet smashed. A beautiful, warm, sunny September day in Orchard Park, NY with another season of Bills football on the horizon... Where Else Would You Rather Be?
