MLB Playoffs – NL Divisional Round

If there is one thing I know, it's Major League Baseball. Do you know how I know this? The team I predicted to represent the NL in the World Series before the season started finished with the best record in the NL during the regular season. Don't believe me? Here, take a look. Oh, and please don't pay attention to how I missed on the other three playoff teams.
Colorado Rockies vs Philadelphia Phillies
The Rockies were pushed hard by my Atlanta Braves but they managed to hang on and secure the wildcard for the second time in three years. They face a very stiff challenge in the first round as they take on the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies themselves had a great year as they pretty much cruised to their third straight NL East crown.
In Game One, we'll see Ubaldo Jimenez take the mound for Colorado while trade deadline acquisition Cliff Lee gives it a go for Philadelphia. Lee was almost an afterthought as Philadelphia pushed hard for Toronto's Roy Halladay but eventually refused to give up the huge package that Toronto was demanding. That move seemed to be a good one for Toronto. Lee then proceeded to win his first give games for the Phillies in dominating fashion before falling back down to Earth. He eventually finished 7-4 in the NL and 14-13 overall for the season. The NL record is a good one for Lee but some people might be concerned with the fact that he lost his last two starts. Amazingly enough, this will be Jimenez's first time facing Philadelphia this season. Lee faced Colorado just after his trade to Philadelphia going seven innings, striking out nine, and only allowing one earned run.
Game Two appears to be an advantage for Colorado as Aaron Cook (11-6) will pitch against Cole Hamels (10-11). Hamels was a hero last postseason but has been rather erratic this season. For every four game winning streak, he would follow it up with a two or three game losing streak. The success for the Phillies in this game is going to rely heavily on which version of Cole Hamels takes the mound.
Some people might be inclined to pick Philadelphia because they are a division winner and Colorado simply won the wild card, but let's relax on that sentiment my friends. The Phillies finished the season 93-69 which is only one game better than Colorado at 92-70. Along with their records, most of their statistics were identical. The Rockies had the better team batting average at .261 to .258. The Phillies had more runs per game at 5.1 to 5.0. And the ERA was also better for Philadelphia, 4.16 to 4.22.
Simply put, this is a very tight series and appears to be going five games. I'm going with the Phillies for the simple reason that they are the defending champs and that has to mean something once playoff baseball starts.

St Louis Cardinals vs Los Angeles Dodgers
I know I picked the Dodgers to represent the NL in the World Series, but it isn't happening. Postseason baseball comes down to one huge factor and that factor is pitching.
In Game One, we have Chris Carpenter (17-4) going against Randy Wolf (11-7). Since going 2-3 in the month of June, Carpenter has tallied an impressive record of 12-1. Included in those wins are two victories against the Dodgers. On July 27th, Carpenter pitched seven innings of one run baseball in a 6-1 victory for St Louis. Then on August 17th, he pitched eight innings of two run baseball to get the Cardinals another victory, 3-2. This isn't meaning to be a slight against Wolf, I just think Carpenter is that good. Wolf was the starting pitched for LA on that July 27th game against Carpenter but he only lasted six innings and took the loss. He hasn't faced St Louis at any other time so maybe it was a fluke.
Game Two pits another pitching matchup heavily in favor of St Louis as Adam Wainwright (19-8) goes against Clayton Kershaw (8-8). Wainwright faced the Dodgers twice this season, going 1-0 and pitching at least seven innings in each game. Just for the record, in the game where he got the no decision, the Cardinals did win the game 3-2. Kershaw faced the Cardinals twice as well but got a no decision in each contest. It should be a point of interest that the Dodgers did lose both of those games 3-2 and in one of them, Kershaw only lasted 3.2 innings.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for the Dodgers to win the NL (and possibly face Boston in the World Series) but I just don't see it happening. They may have finished with the best record in the NL, but I am not quite sure that they are the best team. Before actually winning their last two games against Colorado to seal the NL West crown, the Dodgers lost five games in a row and seven out of nine. That isn't exactly the best swing of momentum as they hit the most important part of the season. On top of that, St Louis won the season series against Los Angeles 5-2.

Scott will be posting his breakdown and predictions for the AL series tomorrow before these series get started. Because we're overly competitive with picking things, I'll post my predictions for the AL series below so that we can keep track and see who does the best.
Boston Red Sox vs California Angels
Yes, I know they aren't the California Angels. I just refuse to write out that ridiculously long name.
Red Sox in 4
Twins vs New York Yankees
The Yankees are good…really good.

NFL Power Rankings – Week Four

1. New York Giants (1) – Another win against a team they should beat. The Giants better hope Eli's foot feels better soon because they have a huge game in two weeks.
2. New Orleans Saints (3) – Do you know what the scariest thing about the Saints is right now? They have won the last two games without any passing touchdowns from Drew Brees. So basically while everybody was scared to death about their high flying offense, the Saints proved their defense was good enough to carry them. That is pretty impressive.
3. Indianapolis Colts (4) – The Colts completely dominated the Seahawks, although I would've been shocked had it gone any other way. When you're lining up against a team starting Seneca Wallace, that is like being spotted a 10-0 lead before the opening kickoff.
4. New England Patriots (8) – On the flip side to what I wrote below, big win for New England. It amazes me how many close games they win and how many of those games fall into the "lucky" category. I suppose good teams are the ones who get those breaks.
5. Baltimore Ravens (2) – Tough loss for Baltimore. They had a chance but lost it in the end. It might be an old cliché but they have to find a way to win those games, especially against a team like New England.
6. Minnesota Vikings (7) – While the Vikings still almost blew it on MNF, they came away with the win. Brett Favre uncharacteristically played very well and turnover free, almost like he had something to prove…
7. Philadelphia Eagles (6) – The Eagles had a bye week and for their sake, hopefully Donovan McNabb is ready to go. With three easy games against Tampa Bay, Oakland, and Washington coming up, look for them to pad their record a little bit.
8. Pittsburgh Steelers (10) – I've been told a million times since last night that the Steelers are back, although I still have my doubts. Regardless, they play Detroit and Cleveland in the next two weeks so fire up the wagon because it's time for Steeler Nation everybody!!!
9. NY Jets (5) – Welcome to reality Mark Sanchez. It's the NFL and you're going to have many more games like the one you had on Sunday. The thing that will distinguish you from the "busts" is how well you rebound and shake it off for the next game.
10. Denver Broncos (14) – I still really don't know if Denver is "for real", but they are 4-0 so I feel bad doubting them. Thing is, I watched the Bills start 4-0 last year and win three of their next 12 games so I'm a little hesitant about bumping them up any higher at this point. So basically what I'm saying is, settle down Denver fans. If they win at least two of the next three I'll be sure to bump Denver up even higher and take them seriously going forward.
11. San Diego Chargers (9) – Bill Simmons said it best via Twitter during the Chargers/Steelers game. "Note to America: We decided to take tonight off. It's a long season. Hope you understand. Sincerely, the San Diego Chargers."
12. Atlanta Falcons (12) – With the Saints winning during their bye week, the Falcons will have to come back next week more focused than ever to keep pace with New Orleans. It won't be easy as the Falcons face San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, and New Orleans in the next four weeks. I think after the next month has been played out we'll be able to effectively judge if the Falcons have improved from last year or fallen off a bit.
13. San Francisco 49ers (16) – Make no mistake, the 49ers have a pretty solid team put together. They are one incredibly lucky play away from starting out 4-0. Granted, three of those wins are against NFC West teams which isn't saying much, but they are still playing much better than they have in the past. Let's chalk it up to a team playing to the tune of their head coach. And before I'm accused of jumping on the Mike Singletary bandwagon, here is what before the season started on September 7th, 2009:
"If
it wasn't for the QB position, I'd easily have the Niners challenging for the NFC West crown. I really like the coaching style of Mike Singletary and I was really impressed with their style of play after he took over last season."
14. Chicago Bears (15) – The Bears let the Lions hang around for 30 minutes, taking a 21-21 tie into the locker room, but then they took control outscoring Detroit 27-3 in the second half. While I'm still not overly impressed with Chicago, they do have a 3-1 record heading into their bye week. I have this feeling that the NFC North is going to come down to the final few weeks so it's hard to predict anything at this point.
15. Cincinnati Bengals (17) – Did anyone catch the story about how Carson Palmer had to convince Marvin Lewis to go for it on 4th and 11 with a little over a minute remaining in overtime? Lewis was basically coaching not to lose and Palmer convinced him that you have to play to win. My admiration for Palmer went up increasingly after reading this story. It's nice to know some players (or coaches) still have the guts to play for a win. After watching four weeks of Buffalo Bills football, I was almost convinced otherwise.
16. Green Bay Packers (11) – If the Packers have any plans of making the playoffs this year, they need to fix their offensive line in a hurry. Jared Allen spent an equal amount of time in their backfield as Aaron Rodgers did. Speaking of Rodgers, he isn't going to last the season if he keeps taking the hits that he took Monday night.
17. Dallas Cowboys (13) – Tough loss for Dallas on Sunday but they only have themselves to blame. The lack of tackling on the Brandon Marshall touchdown was something straight out of Madden. How do so many people miss one guy? On top of that, they still had a chance to tie before two incomplete passes from Tony Romo ended the game. For as much as I bash the guy, I'll give him credit where it's due. Staring at 4th down and the game, he made a great pass to Sam Hurd - who made an even better run after the catch- to get them within scoring position. It was a nice play all around. I tweeted this before the play was run, but I would've absolutely called a QB draw on the final play for Dallas and I stand by that statement today.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars (22) –Take a look at their upcoming schedule leading up to the game against the Colts in Week 15: Seattle, St Louis, Tennessee, Kansas City, Jets, Buffalo, San Francisco, Houston and Miami. All I'm saying is things just got a little more interesting in the AFC South. But don't be fooled, they aren't winning that division.
19. Houston Texans (20) – In the two losses suffered by Houston, the combined record of those two teams are 5-3. In the two wins by Houston, the combined record is 1-7. I'll let you guys figure that out.
20. Arizona Cardinals (19) – Arizona doesn't have the easy road this year like they had in 2008. They are already two games back in the win column to San Francisco and its three back if you factor in that SF beat them on opening day. For the Cardinals sake, hopefully Kurt Warner took a dip in the fountain of youth during the bye week.
21. Miami Dolphins (23) – The Dolphins completely dominated Buffalo on Sunday. Without Joey Porter, with a second year QB making his first ever NFL start, the Dolphins didn't even seem fazed as they beat the hell out of the Bills and embarrassed them right out of the half empty Land Shark Stadium.
22. Tennessee Titans (18) – Because I'm completely unoriginal, I'll ask the same question everyone else is asking, what happened to the Tennessee Titans? Did Vince Young's voodoo doll finally start working? Does Jeff Fisher finally need to move on? Is the death of Steve McNair still looming over the franchise? Listen, I don't have the answers, but the Titans are finished. No way they make the playoffs after this start.
23. Seattle Seahawks (21) – It's almost comparable to JaMarcus Russell, but not quite since he wasn't a top draft pick, but how the hell does Seneca Wallace keep his job? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? This guy is so bad I actually washed the dishes twice on Sunday just to get away from the game.
24. Carolina Panthers (25) – I'd like to congratulate Jake Delhomme on not throwing an interception this week for the first time in the 2009 NFL Season. Cheers Jake! I also apologize to everybody reading this for using the same joke that has been used for years when a bad team has a bye week. My apologies.
25. Detroit Lions (26) – I didn't intentionally move Detroit up after a blowout loss, but the other teams below them are just that bad. I was going to originally put Washington ahead of them until I remembered that they beat Washington last week and that wouldn't make much sense at all. Especially when you consider…
26. Washington Redskins (27) - ...Washington barely beat a very bad Tampa Bay team. I mean, they were losing 10-0 at the half, managed to almost tie the game and had the PAT blocked. Luckily Campbell hit Santana Moss for another touchdown or it would've probably been the worst two weeks in Redskins history.
27. Buffalo Bills (24) – You know what really grinds my gears? That Pizza Hut commercial with Drew Cerza, the Wing King from Buffalo, NY. So you're telling me that Pizza Hut wings are actually so comparable to genuine Buffalo wings that nobody can tell. I call BS on this. And I'm disappointed in Cerza for selling out his name like that.
28. Oakland Raiders (29) – I've said this a million times about a million different players, but how is J.P. Losman stuck in the UFL (assuming it wasn't his choice to begin with) while players like JaMarcus Russell continue to start for their team. Unbelievable. I want to know how the experts rank draft busts because right now Russell has to be in the discussion for top five of all time, right?
29. Kansas City Chiefs (29) – Is it any coincidence that the three teams who fired their offensive coordinator less than two weeks before the regular season are in the bottom six of the league? Maybe those coordinators weren't getting the job done, but that is also a sign of complete chaos when that happens.
30. Cleveland Browns (32) – The Browns almost got the win…almost… and it was against a pretty good team on top of that. I have no doubts that if Cleveland plays the same brand of football this Sunday they'll chalk up their first victory of the season.
31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31) – The Bucs came close to netting their first victory but fell just short against Washington. Normally I'd have to give them credit, but these are the same Redskins who lost to Detroit just last week. So honestly, Tampa Bay probably should've won, especially considering the fact that they were winning 10-0 at halftime. If Tampa couldn't handle Buffalo or Washington, how are they supposed to take on Philly, New England, Green Bay, Atlanta, New Orleans, or the Jets?
32. St Louis Rams (30) – The Rams are closing in on a full calendar year without a regular season win. Honestly, I can't believe it took me this long to put them at 32. I know the Browns are bad, but this was a complete oversight on my part and I apologize to all the readers out there. To be specific, the last time the Rams won a regular season game was October 19, 2008 against the Dallas Cowboys. With games coming up against Minnesota, Jacksonville, and Indianapolis; the next time the Rams even have a fighting chance at winning is Week 8 against Detroit. Looking at their schedule beyond that, I'm hard pressed to find a victory this season. We might be looking at another 0-16 season here folks.
Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins Running Diary

We're going to try something new this week and see how it works, so throughout the afternoon as the game goes on, I'll be updating this post in real time with all my thoughts and comments on the game. You'll need to keep refreshing the page or check back throughout the day in order to stay up to date. As always, feedback is appreciated and can be addressed to feedback@dandssports.com or can be left on our Facebook Page.
3:30pm - I've been having some technical difficulties with MS Word (I know, problems with a Microsoft product, shocking huh?) linking to the blog, so I'm going to have to do this the difficult way, may result in a few less posts from me, but hopefully the Bills give me some good things to talk about for a change.
3:41pm - Willis McGahee already has more TDs this season in 4 games than he did in each of his last 2 years in Buffalo. It's no wonder Bills fans hate him so much, the theory that he wasn't trying to just seems more and more true all the time.
4:01pm - Alright folks, gametime is just ahead! Here's hoping the Bills can take advantage of a quarterback getting his first ever NFL start today and that the offense can actually operate functionally. I plan on keeping an ongoing tally of Trent Edwards pass attempts over 15 yards, that is passes thrown in the air over 15 yards, not just gains of that length. Devin is setting the over/under at 3...
4:12pm - So Chad Henne's first pass attempt was 15+ yards down the field... glad a guy with almost no NFL experience has the guts to try it but Edwards doesn't.
4:13pm - Chris Kelsay has taken a ton of heat from Bills fans, myself included, for making a boatload of cash and not producing. Let me say he's been much improved this year so far.
4:18pm - Great work Bills, Roscoe gets you fantastic field position and you go 3 and out... Lucky a penalty bailed you out. Now they better do something with it, and I don't mean a field goal.
4:21pm - Discouraging start by the offense yet again. 2 gift wrapped opportunities that lead to 0 points. At least Fred Jackson is still running the ball well.
4:32pm - Welcome Back Beastmode! Could you and Fred kindly wake up the rest of your offensive teammates?
4:34pm - Wow, more awful play calling. Can we officially start the Please Fire Dick Jauron Countdown Clock now?
4:39pm - The Bengals and Browns are doing their best to end in a tie in Cleveland. It always amazes me when an NFL games does end in a tie. I mean, how can neither team manage to at least get into field goal position in a full quarter?
4:43pm - So Mark Sanchez is human after all? Pick 6 for New Orleans to put them up 10-0.
4:48pm - Both my cats are curled up and sleeping, after watching this game so far, I'm a little jealous.
4:52pm - Speaking of Pick 6's, the Dolphins get one by jumping a route. Gee, do you think they realized that the Bills throw underneath and nothing else?
4:54pm - The Bengals finally kick a field goal with 4 seconds left in OT to get the win. It may not be pretty, but they're quietly 3-1.
4:56pm - Trent Tracker = 1, nice grab by Owens... see what happens when you go down the field???
4:58pm - Wow, move the ball down the field in a hurry, then net -3 yards once you get to the 15. Settle for a field goal. This is no way to win football games. Hey, at least they outscored the Sabres this weekend though, that was a legit concern for some.
5:04pm - Completely unproven, first time NFL starter - 3 pass attempts over 15 yards. Multi-year starter - 1 attempt. Words can't convey the frustration I have with this.
5:08pm - 17-3 Miami already in the 2nd quarter. For those questioning why they were above the Bills in Devin's latest Power Rankings, do you need more proof?
5:10pm - Things currently more interesting to me than this game: VeryFakeAlDavis on Twitter - "Pretty good right? RT @FootballEditor: JaMarcus Russell 11 of 30 passing, one fumble."
5:14pm - The word "cougar" becoming mainstream has completely ruined all the fun involved.
5:24pm - Maybe someday the Bills will understand that the offensive line can make or break a team, and it's the reason our team has been broken for the past decade. 17-3 Miami at the half, 6 quarters and counting without an offensive TD for Buffalo.
5:30pm - My buddy Paul showed up at halftime, I tried to warn him it wasn't worth watching. I will feel no guilt when he suffers in the 2nd half.
5:41pm - I almost forgot to turn the game back on... in fact, I wish I had.
5:45pm - Hey Bills, newsflash, the Dolphins are going to run. If we could force Henne to make plays the defense might be able to hold them in check.
5:49pm - Mark Sanchez is directly responsible for 14 New Orleans points. Maybe Jets fans should haven't been in such a hurry to annoint him.
5:50pm - Alright Bills, might as well go for full fledged embarassment at this point!
5:56pm - Good Lord, this is just difficult to watch at this point. Another route jumped. It's going to keep happening all year if we never try to throw the ball down the field.
6:00pm - Anybody think Jauron would have ever gone for it right there if the tables were turned? He wouldn't know killer instinct if it bitch slapped him across his skeleton face.
6:03pm - Text from Devin - "I'll let you decide where to put the Bills ranking spot because if you let me I am putting them at 32" While it's bad, there is still Oakland, Cleveland, Tampa, and St. Louis behind us at least...
6:08pm - Paul didn't even make it through the 3rd quarter, he left in favor of going home to do yardwork, and again, I'm a little jealous.
6:09pm - I said it already earlier today, but if the Bills lose to the Browns next week and Jauron still has a job, I'm not sure I can handle being a Bills fan anymore. Remind me again why I dropped $400 on Sunday Ticket instead of spending $180 on Center Ice?
6:12pm - Trent through the ball for more than 15 yards for the second time. He's 2-2, 62 yards on those plays. I'm also one more attempt away from winning the pool.
6:15pm - 3-3 on deep passes now... it only took 3 quarters to figure it out today huh?
6:17pm - To add insult to injury, in one of my fantasy leagues I'm up against Ronnie Brown and the Dolphins Defense. I'm currently down by 49 points.
6:23pm - Buffalo Bills Football: Failure Tested, Failure Approved!
6:32pm - Sort of regretting my purchase of Bills @ Panthers tickets for 10/25. Oh well, at least it'll get me out and about while my wife is in Thailand!
6:33pm - 3rd and 6, completion for a loss. Amazing!
6:34pm - For those seeking entertainment, I'd suggest the Jets/Saints game. Both teams are actually playing football in that game...
6:37pm - The Jets defense has mostly shut down the Saints offense today actually, but Sanchez is costing them the game with his turnovers and subsequent Saints points.
6:38pm - That's 4 sacks today for the Bills, has to be the most in quite some time. See, I can pretend there is a positive coming out of this game...
6:42pm - The Bills last divisional win was December 9, 2007 and I don't see the trend ending anytime soon.
6:44pm - My focus has officially switched to "What's for dinner?"
6:45pm - Did Kevin Harlan get a new stopwatch this week or something? I've never heard a broadcaster announce the hangtime on EVERY single punt!
6:47pm - Well the Bills have officially quit for the day, I'm on the verge of doing so as well.
6:47pm - "Miami looking every bit the division champion they are." Really Harlan??? Are you sure the Bills don't just suck that much? The Dolphins were still 0-3 coming in to this game in case you forgot. They're better than 1-3 suggests, but they're still only 3rd best in the division.
6:49pm - I play Fantasy Football to escape being a Bills fan, and now they're costing me that too? Down by 59 and climbing against Brown and the Fish Defense.
6:50pm - 4 for 5 on 15+ yard pass attempts now...
6:52pm - Another Trent Edwards INT. A fitting place to end this little experiment I think. Unless people tell me they really enjoyed this, I think I shall never attempt that again. It might be enjoyable if I were to follow a decent game, but this was just painful all the way.
NFL Picks - Week 4

Devin is busy with reality this week, so I'm taking over the picks column. I think he quite purposely planned this, as this is the hardest week to pick thus far in my opinion. Anyways, I managed to go 12-4 last week, which I can't complain about and maybe I can keep that momentum moving forward. I'd like to hang my hat on picking the Lions to get their first win in a very long time, but I'm pretty sure many others, Devin included, picked it as well. I will say that I absolutely did not expect the Titans to fall to 0-3, thus making the Jets 3-0, nor did I expect Pittsburgh to drop a game to Cinncy either. We're 3 weeks in and we've already seen quite a few surprises, and the true contenders are starting to shake loose from the pretenders at this point, so without any further nonsense, let's get on with the Week 4 picks shall we?
Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears
Sure, the Lions knocked off the Redskins last week and assured they won't go 0 for the season again, but let's face it, they still aren't that good of a football team. As for the Bears, I'm not sold either way yet. I predicted Forte to have a sophomore slump this season and avoided him in fantasy land entirely, and so far I look like a genius for that. With Cutler helming the team, it's going to involve a lot of chucking the ball all over the place and that doesn't work out well for a feature back. The Bears showed signs of being the team so many expect last week and Cutler was solid, and I'd expect that to continue against the lowly Lions.
Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns
The Browns are flat out the worst team in the NFL I've seen this year, and Devin would agree since they currently occupy slot #32 in his Power Rankings. The Craptastic Quarterback Carousel continues in Cleveland (how's that for alliteration?) this week as Derek Anderson gets the go as the starter. It's no secret Eric Mangini is not well liked by his players and it really seems as though many have given up on him already in an attempt to see him lose his job.
As for the Bengals, if you read my AFC North preview, you'd see that I expected the Bengals to bounce back a bit with a healthy Carson Palmer returning to form. They certainly seemed to be on that path after knocking off the defending champs last week. They are one bizarre miracle play away from 3-0 at this point. They should have no trouble with this one, though divisional games often prove quirky.
Seattle Seahawks @ Indianapolis Colts
The Seahawks are a very different team without a healthy Matt Hasselbeck leading the way. Last week they battled hard with the Bears despite Seneca Wallace starting at QB and despite some of the worst uniforms I can ever recall. This week they head on the road to Indy to face a team that has looked pretty excellent thus far and Peyton Manning who is up to his usual tricks. With the Colts averaging in the mid 20s and Manning throwing for over 300 yards per game, the Seahawks defense is going to be in for a long day.
New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs
The Giants have simply looked like the best team in the NFL thus far this season while cruising to a 3-0 start. I spent all offseason talking about how the Giants had no receivers and were therefore going to struggle throwing the ball, but Eli Manning has made due just fine with Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Add the two headed running attack of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw and they are damn tough to stop. By contrast, the Chiefs offense has been downright miserable. Arrowhead Stadium can be a tough place to play, but I don't think the Giants are going to have many issues this week.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Washington Redskins
This game couldn't have come at a better time for Jim Zorn and the Redskins... or is it perhaps their worst nightmare? After being the team to finally hand the Lions a win, Washington is under heavy fire and Zorn may be looking for a new job soon. Jason Campbell hasn't panned out in the least as an NFL starter and Clinton Portis can't do it by himself. If an absolutely dreadful Bucs team were to beat the Redskins at home, there would probably be no recovering. Byron Leftwhich has finally been sent to the bench where he belonged all along in favor of Josh Johnson. The Bucs have two young QBs that need to see the field if they're going to develop at all and that begins this week. Tampa is a very bad team, but I'm willing to bet they still put up a fight before Washington ultimately pulls one out.
Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
I don't think anybody would have said before the season that the Titans would be heading into this game at 0-3, but here we are. The Titans need to turn things around very quickly if they're going to be thinking about a playoff berth this year, and this is as good of a place as any to start. The Titans defense is not the same as it was a year ago, and it's cost them so far, but the Jaguars have one guy to focus on. If they can bottle up Maurice Jones-Drew, Tennessee should have a good day. Despite the record, the Titans are still a good team and they will show it on Sunday. Chris Johnson has a big day and the Titans get their first win of the season.
Oakland Raiders @ Houston Texans
Oh those Oakland Raiders... so far the highlight of the year for me with regards to the Raiders is following @veryfakeAlDavis on Twitter. He makes every bit as much sense as the real Al Davis does. JaMarcus Russell is absolutely terrible and doesn't deserve to be on an NFL field, much less as a starting quarterback. 31-75, 378 yards, 1 TD, 4 INTs in 3 games. The Raiders are scoring 12 points a game and somehow they actually won a game.
Houston has played Jekyll and Hyde so far this season, but they are still a much better team than the Raiders. The defense is their weak spot, but since the Raiders have no offense at all, that shouldn't be an issue this week. Maybe we'll finally see Steve Slaton show up and make all those that drafted him in the 1st round of their fantasy drafts feel a little better, but even if he doesn't, Schaub and company will toss the ball all over the field.
Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots
In the words of Lee Corso, "not so fast my friends!". That's what the Patriots said to everybody with last week's fairly dominant win over the Falcons. People were trying to write off New England after a slow start, but the Patriots are still a team to be dealt with. Baltimore has played very well so far, but their defense is not quite the caliber it has been in years past and the Patriots will be looking to exploit that. This is a tough one to pick and I've been very impressed with Joe Flacco so far this season as the offense is putting up nearly 35 points a game. I hope the Ravens can pull off a win, but I'm going with the home team in this case since it's so close in my book. Pats move to 3-1 and make everybody forget what they were thinking last week.
New York Jets @ New Orleans Saints
This game is everything the Bucs/Redskins game isn't. Both teams come in 3-0 and the winner will establish themselves as one of the best in the league. The Jets have mostly gotten things done with a much improved defense, which isn't too surprising considering Rex Ryan is at the helm now. The Saints of course have used their offense to blow everybody off the field thus far, averaging a mere 40 points per game. Something has to give though. The Saints showed their offense can be slowed down last week, as the Bills held them for 3 quarters, so if the Jets offense can produce, they clearly have a good chance. I'm not quite ready to annoint Mark Sanchez just yet and he'll need a very solid game in order for the Jets to win. In the end, I'm going with the home team again, as I think the Saints offense will do just enough to outscore the Jets.
Buffalo Bills @ Miami Dolphins
The Bills are getting my pick solely because Chad Henne is starting his first NFL game. The Dolphins may be 0-3, and while they certainly aren't as good as last year would have indicated, they aren't completely awful either. The Bills looked highly disappointing on offense last week, not able to score at all against a less than stellar Saints defense. Trent Edwards needs to start attempting to throw the ball down the field if the Bills expect to have any success, and if he doesn't get the ball to Terrell Owens and Lee Evans a bit more, that blow up everybody wants so bad will more than likely come. The Bills defense has been solid and should keep a first time starting QB in check, so the offense needs to put up points. Bills squeak out an ugly one down in Miami.
Dallas Cowboys @ Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are 3-0, but only because of who they played in my opinion. Cleveland and Oakland are two of the worst 5 teams in the league, and the win against the Bengals was a bit of a fluke clearly. The charade can't go on forever, and while the Cowboys aren't really that great of a team in their own right, they're still better than Denver. Tony Romo attempted to silence critics last week by playing a safe, solid game and it worked... kind of. He got the win, but the critics just found a new reason to rip him apart. Romo is certainly overrated and got too much hype early on, but he can still be a decent QB in this league. Felix Jones won't be playing, but Marion Barber should be back and I think the Cowboys offense should be able to put up pretty solid numbers on the Broncos. Dallas has nothing special on defense, but I have a feeling this is the week we see the real Kyle Orton show up, and the turnovers that come with that.
St. Louis Rams @ San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers return home after a crushing defeat at the hands of Super Hero Brett Favre in Minnesota last Sunday. The Vikings snatched away a victory, but San Fran proved they are a team to be taken seriously. They have to be the odds on favorite to win the NFC West based on what we've seen thus far. The Frank Gore injury is a serious blow to the team, as the offense was heavily reliant on him, but thankfully it's the Rams they face this week. A tough 49er defense should easily shut down the abysmal Rams offense and take some of the pressure of Shaun Hill in the process. This game could be bowling shoe ugly, but Mike Singletary and his team should certainly walk away with the win at home.
San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers defense has suddenly looked a lot less mighty since Troy Polamalu went down in week 1, giving up a combined 40 points in their two losses since then. They get to return home this week, where they have been nearly unbeatable over the last few seasons, and it comes just in time for Pittsburgh. 1-2 was not the start most people had Pittsburgh pegged for, and with the Ravens off to 3-0, the Steelers need to pick it up in order to keep pace. San Diego has looked pretty solid in going 2-1 so far, losing by just 5 against a tough Baltimore team. As usual, the offense is putting points on the board, despite the injury to LaDainian Tomlinson, but the defense has had trouble stopping anybody too.
I think this game will be a bit higher scoring than is usually the case when Pittsburgh is involved, and I see the Steelers getting a much needed win in the end. They are better than their record would indicate and this is the perfect chance to prove it. As we've seen before, the Chargers have the luxury of being able to drop some games early and still win their division, so a loss is not critical to them in this game.
Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings
Forgive me if I don't pile on the "Brett Favre should have been playing all along" bandwagon. I still can't stand the crap he pulled all summer and one pass isn't going to change that. Poor Greg Lewis by the way, the catch was far better than the pass in this instance, but that is clearly not how it will be remembered. The only thing I will say, is that is the first play all year I've seen that Favre has made that either Jackson or Rosenfels likely couldn't have. Fact of the matter is that without Adrian Peterson, the Vikings are a fairly average team at best. Peterson is one of the most fun players to watch in the league at this point and you really do sit there waiting to see what he can do next.
As for the Packers, Aaron Rodgers is a damn good quarterback and has proven it early and often. Their defense is also significantly improved this season under Dom Capers, and will probably only get better as the team gets more familiar with the new scheme. The Packers have a bye after this game, followed by Detroit and Cleveland, and then a quick rematch with this same Minnesota team at Lambeau. This presents a great opportunity for the Packers to put some distance on the rest of the division, as both the Vikings and Bears have a more difficult couple of weeks in front of them. I look for the Packers to head into the Metrodome seeking revenge on #4, coming at him hard and often. Packers win despite a huge day from Peterson.
